How to choose an "Engineering Discipline"

My juniors ask me different kind of questions about engineering and the most frequently asked question is "Which Engineering Discipline is most important".  This question is mostly asked by those students who had just completed their intermediate and are thinking about their admission in engineering. Students are mostly confused in choosing any engineering discipline because they have no good reason in deciding “which discipline should be chosen”.

First I want to discuss some of the reasons which a student use to select any kind of engineering or any other disciplines.

• The very first one is “JOB”. That is students first of all think that if we choose this or that engineering then what would be the chance of getting a job. Now they search on Google that what is the scope of that discipline in which they want to get admission and make discussions with friends and get opinions of the seniors and the people who are related with that engineering discipline.

• The other reason is that they follow the Choice of Their Parents or Elders. That is if ones father mother brother sister or any other elder is an engineer then he either follow him/her and choose that discipline or he follow his opinion and choose that discipline which he/she wants.

• The third reason is that they Follow The Trend which is running around. That is if, in a specific area, people have mentality to choose civil or electrical or software engineering then the student would also have built in mentality to choose that discipline.

• And the last and the best reason is ones Interest and Passion. Every student has a choice in his mind and a feeling of likeness to some specific discipline.

Now according to my opinion if a person wants to choose any discipline in any walk of life especially engineering then one must take care of the following facts in making decision.

First of all one must follow his passion in choosing any field. Because when a person decides to choose any specific field then he is deciding that field for his/her whole life. So he/she must think that whether the discipline which I am going to choose is suitable for me or not and whether I could continue with it or not. If the answer is no then he/she should not choose that discipline. And if yes then he/she must follow his passion because if one have interest in his work then he can make it much better and can get success but before that he/she should collect all the necessary information about that field which he/she wants to choose.

Secondly one must also respect the choice of elders’ opinion and choice but in that case if he/she is not able to choose any discipline. Opinions of the seniors and elder people is worth more important because they had gone through those circumstances which are next to that person so they can better guide how to chose the right path which would lead to the success.

Now some students follow the Trend of the Society around them. It is the most worse reason and mentality because everyone starts to choose the same discipline without making sense that whether it is write or wrong or whether it will be suitable for me or not then few out of hundreds would get their goals and rest would remain hanged in the air.

Some students also make a choice on the market of a discipline. That is they search whether there is any scope of getting job or not. So the search out for the numbers and scales of jobs which engineers of any specific discipline is getting. For example if  in any country the demand of Civil Engineers is increased then the students start to choose Civil Engineering as a field of interest or if in a typical area demand of Electrical or Software Engineers is increased then people start getting admission in these fields without even thinking that when they complete their study after 4 or 6 years then will there be any vacancy in that field or not.

So the most correct and right way of choosing any discipline is that first a student should collect all the necessary information about any discipline which he want to choose then he/she should check what are the technical benefits of that field and what is the scope that after completing ones study he/she would be able to get any job or not. One should also think out about the practical importance of that field in his area, city and country. He/she should also workout that the college or university in which he/she is willing to get admission is rather suitable for him/her or not regarding its faculty, labs, and experience of providing knowledge. So if one take care of these facts and reasons then he/she would be able to make a right and a good decision in “CHOOSING THE DISCIPLINE OF ENGINEERING”
