Formatting Flash Drive Showing "Cannot Format" Error (Windows XP)

If your USB Flash Drive is infected with some Trojans and other viruses and you want to get rid of these viruses then simply you should have to format it and your USB will be free from such infections.

Now in order to format your USB Flash Drive you can follow different methods

1. Formatting from My Computer.
2. Formatting from Command Prompt.
3. Formatting from Control Panel

The most easy and quickest method is "Formatting from My Computer". You simply double click My Computer, right click on your USB drive icon, and click on format. Then select the appropriate option (mostly FAT 32 and quick format), and then click on format.

But sometimes you get and error that “USB drive cannot be formatted because it is in use" some other thing like that. Now what would be done to format it?

One way is to format it using command prompt but it is too lengthy and laborious task and also it is now old fashioned.

So the other easy and efficient way is to format USB for the Control Panel.

For this purpose, I will show you the easy steps to follow and you can easily get rid of infections and can format your USB drive easily

First of all go to control panel, change to classic view, and then click onadministrative tools and then from the list of tools.

The following window will appear

Now from the above shown window select Disk Management option by clicking on it. Then right click on your USB drive and click format after selecting the appropriate options.

Now rather your format would be completed instantly or it will show an error message. If it completes then close windows and your format is done.

But if it doesn’t and shows some kind of error like your “USB drive is in use”then at the end of that message it will ask you that “Do you want to format”click yes or format any option which it give and your USB will be formatted without any problems.
